Floating Rotterdam, a floating and temporary initiative in the Rijnhaven, started on 1 July at the Kop van Zuid. Floating Rotterdam will become a ‘hub’ of innovative and sustainable floating objects on which visitors can relax and stay on the water. As part of this, four Wikkelboats open their doors. In addition to a place to spend the night, these sustainable tiny houseboats offer space for gatherings, meetings and small-scale events.
The Wikkelboats are located on a 36 meter long jetty. They are largely self-sufficient and have a top made of 24 layers of recycled corrugated cardboard. The Wikkelboats are equipped with all kinds of home automation, an internet projector and built-in speakers, a kitchen, sanitary facilities and a spacious terrace with veranda. Initiator Sander Waterval explains: “The Wikkelboats are cleverly designed so that they can be used multifunctionally. During the day for workshops, meetings, break-outs, exhibitions, living room concerts, film screenings, lunches and dinners for up to 15 people. In the evening you can spend the night with 6-8 people by boat.”
Initiator Sander Waterval works closely with the various accommodations and locations on the Kop van Zuid. This collaboration offers even more possibilities for events, because the locations can easily be combined with each other. LantarenVenster, for example, is a committed partner because the Wikkelboats are located right next to it. Wikkelboat also works together with hotel nhow Rotterdam in the field of facilities.
About Wikkelboat
The initiator and inventor of the Wikkelboats is Sander Waterval, founder and co-owner of The Red Apple Marina in Rotterdam-Centre. There are currently two Wikkelboats in The Red Apple Marina which have received worldwide media attention over the past four years.
Cooperation partners
Floating Rotterdam will be collaborating with many parties, including the Municipality of Rotterdam, LantarenVenster film theater, Katendrecht District Council, Rijnmond Sportmonding and 010Sports. It is jointly ensured that appropriate programming is carried out on and around the jetty park. The Wikkelboats can serve as a base for this.
