Increased demand for airport hotels

Research by international data agency STR shows that demand for hotel rooms in airport locations has increased. In 2010, the agency measured an average of 55 million room nights in airport hotels worldwide. In 2015, this number increased to 65 million overnight stays.

Hilton this week published the survey results of a survey of 5506 18-plus travelers, drawn from the United States, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and China. This shows that 61 percent of respondents are more likely to choose an overnight stay at an airport hotel for business rather than leisure. More than 86 percent only consider an airport hotel when missing a flight. Incidentally, a large majority indicated that they had a more positive feeling about the overall hotel chain after staying in an airport hotel, including 87 percent of the Dutch respondents.

Whereas previously surveyed travelers had a negative attitude toward airport hotels, 92 to 99 percent of respondents indicated that they did have an interest in certain aspects of airport hotels, following visual documentation from Hilton.

“An increase in the mixed form of travel, with business customers extending their stay and combining it with leisure, has contributed to the growing interest in airport hotels as leisure destinations,” says Shawn McAteer, vice president of Hilton. ‘Today there is a growing demand among vacationers looking for airport hotels. By facilitating spas, pools and culinary options, we are able to meet the expectations of an ever-increasing group of travelers.
