The American hotel chain Marriott has suffered another data breach. In the process, hackers gained insight into the data of 5.2 million guests.
Marriott itself announced this on its website, which talks about a “property system incident.
The leak was reportedly discovered in late February 2020. This involved the use of login credentials of two employees of a Marriott franchisee. The activity has reportedly been going on since mid-January.
It would include customer contact information, such as name, email addresses, phone numbers, and loyalty system information, but without password information.
Marriott has since notified affected customers via email.
In November 2018, Marriott announced that hackers had accessed personal data of 500 million customers of the hotel chain. That number was later revised downward, to a maximum of 383 million customers.
The UK data watchdog Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined the hotel chain €110 million in 2019 for this. Marriott then appealed this.
Marriott is the largest hotel chain in the world, with a portfolio of more than 7,300 properties and 30 brands in 134 countries. Well-known labels include Sheraton, Westin and the Renaissance hotels. (Photo Shutterstock)
