Column: A good feeling

Do you ever have that: A bad feeling about something or someone? I’m sure it is! A word of advice in advance, …… that feeling is almost always correct. Within 5 minutes, you’ll be able to tell if someone is okay or not. Within 5 minutes you will know whether coming to business with another party is going to bring you a lot of fun or a lot of aggravation. Listen to that bad (or good) feeling! It makes the job all that much easier.

It might be nice to take a closer look at the feeling in your work. Where do you get your (positive) energy, how do you avoid problems and how do you make sure you have as much fun as possible while working. Importantly, a little fun in your work because, after all, you’re at it 8 hours a day (or often more).

Tricky

Who can ruin the fun in your daily work. OK, your own boss can of course be a nuisance at times, but if he is really nasty you would have been long gone. Colleagues can also be a source of annoyance at times, but you can avoid and bypass them many times a day. The biggest source of annoyance, of course, are the far too demanding customers. The front row seaters. The tiptoes that begin every sentence with: I want this and I demand that. The a-empathetic tiepjes who think that ‘who pays determines’ and never and never once react enthusiastically if you (again) make a new proposal. And especially the very worst…….. Who have googled everything and have seen that at Kras or OAD the same trip is slightly cheaper. They see you all day as that expensive agency that is only concerned with securing their own margin. Dreadful (often) women (or am I now the feminist union of critical women in the event industry over me?)

Don’t do it

In my opinion, you quickly figure out whether the other party is correct or not. Pretty soon you will feel the ‘click’ and if it is not there: DON’T DO IT!!! No matter how appealing the turnover sounds, how nice the destination is or how beautiful such a trip or your resume would look…… don’t do it!!! Got caught up in it again myself the other day and you don’t want to know how much negative energy the principal causes here at the business. Chagrined staff, no fun turnbook discussions, permanently reproachful looks, permanently bickering about everything……. Pppffffff.

Feeling

In my own practice, providing special events and incentives, we work purely on the basis of ‘a good feeling’. We have chosen to do business only with nice people, that we avoid irritating applicants and invite only sociable suppliers. Not that it’s always one big party at our place, but it just makes working more fun. And since we spend slightly (?) more than 40 hours a week with that work, a little fun is a must.

In the sea

So think carefully about which customer you’re going with. I think you are quite capable of deciding for yourselves who will or will not be on the client list. So determine a little in advance whether you have a good feeling about the other party. If so, … you’re in for a fun business relationship. If not, don’t do business! It will save you a lot of aggravation.
