Icelandair’s mass layoff of cabin crew is off the table. The airline reached a last minute agreement with the cabin crew union.

Icelandair launched a sweeping plan to lay off its cabin crew last Friday as negotiations for new employment conditions came to nothing.

Instead, the airline wanted to leave passenger care to pilots. According to the airline, in-flight service is currently reduced to a minimum anyway because of the coronavirus, so the pilots needed very little training. The plan would take effect as early as Monday.

The new way of working would have meant that pilots would have had to take a course in safety procedures and obtain a certificate under European law for this.
Icelandair stated that it only wanted to temporarily assign pilots to the job while it searched for new cabin crew members in the meantime.

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, Icelandair reached an agreement with the Cabin Crew Association of Iceland. The agreed terms of employment are valid until the end of September 2025. (Photo Shutterstock)
