Malta to restart tourism in phases

Malta is going to restart tourism slowly and in phases. Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli announced this during a well-attended webinar, with more than 1,500 participants.

Startup is done in stages. Starting with domestic tourism between Malta and Gozo. For this first phase, it has been announced that the restaurants, outdoor pools and accommodations, including both hotels and apartments, may reopen their doors starting May 22.
The next step is to launch international tourism. The international airport in Malta is currently open only for possible repatriation and cargo traffic and closed for incoming flights for the time being.

However, preparations are underway to reopen the airport for tourist flights as soon as possible. The reopening of travel corridors depends on the epidemiological situation in the country of departure.

Talks are currently underway with Luxembourg, Serbia, Norway, Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Israel.
The government of Malta has established several protocols that providers of restaurants, outdoor pools and accommodations must comply with when they open.

In parallel with the tourism opening, the Malta Tourism Authority recently announced that it is allocating €5 million for comprehensive online e-learning courses to prepare staff working in the tourism industry in Malta for the post corona phase.

Malta says it is the first country to prepare local staff for the start of tourism in this way. The investment, in partnership with the Malta Tourism Authority, will provide thousands of workers in the tourism sector with a training platform at the highest level.
