Night train Amsterdam-Vienna back

The overnight train from the Austrian capital Vienna arrived at Amsterdam Centraal on Tuesday morning. The Nightjet, as the night train is called, runs every day in the early evening from Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem to Munich, Innsbruck and Vienna.

In the opposite direction, an overnight train arrives in the Netherlands every morning. With the arrival of the Nightjet, the Netherlands has been reconnected to the European network of night trains since 2016. The first Nightjet arrived at Amsterdam Centraal on Tuesday morning. On board Austrian climate and mobility minister Leonore Gewessler and ceo of ÖBB Andreas Matthä. State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management Stientje van Veldhoven and President of NS Marjan Rintel welcomed the Nightjet.

‘After Berlin, Brussels, London and Paris, with this night train to Vienna and Innsbruck, we are adding yet another direct connection to a European capital to our timetable. Moreover, the overnight train is a climate-friendly way to travel internationally,’ says Marjan Rintel, president and CEO of NS. The ceo of ÖBB, Andreas Matthä, also emphasizes the sustainable nature: ‘With the arrival of the Nightjet, we mark the next milestone for a sustainable European network of night trains. Passengers can travel with the Nightjet safely, relaxed and climate-friendly. A single train journey from Vienna to Amsterdam saves almost 100,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions compared to a flight.’

Prepared
It was planned to start this connection on December 13, 2020. Due to corona measures in the various countries, this was not possible. Currently, Germany and Austria are covered by an “orange” color code. “By starting the new connection on May 25, we want to be prepared for when we can welcome all passengers back,” NS said. With the arrival of the Nightjet, Vienna is the fifth European capital in the NS timetable after Berlin, Brussels, London and Paris.
