Travelers want to be able to exercise in hotel

Both business and leisure travelers increasingly want to maintain their healthy lifestyle when staying overnight in a hotel. That’s according to a study by AccorHotels and data company DAN DNA. They asked 2,572 travelers from the Benelux on the basis of which factors they choose a hotel. The possibility of exercising in a hotel – such as an in-house gym, gym nearby or via exercises in their hotel room – influences the hotel choice of 18% of tourists and a third of business travelers.

In addition to an ideal location, a comfortable bed and good value for money, fitness facilities and healthy meals are also increasingly decisive. That’s because 67% of business customers and 65% of leisure travelers say they have adopted a healthier lifestyle in the past two years. That translates into 72% of business and 63% of leisure travelers currently playing at least one sport. They like to continue those healthy habits when they stay at a hotel.

For example, 42% of corporate clients report exercising at the hotel and 21% work on their fitness at an offsite location during their hotel stay. For leisure guests, this second percentage is 10%. Interestingly, the desire to exercise is so high among both groups that 26% and 15% of them, respectively, are willing to put down an extra 5 to 15 euros per night for indoor fitness facilities.

Treadmill inside hotel walls most popular
All exercising hotel guests, whether staying overnight for business or on vacation, work up a sweat most often on the treadmill. Exercising on the cross trainer and lifting weights are also favorites. Furthermore, among business travelers, sports in the hotel room is also gaining popularity. As many as 21% stretch, 20% venture into push-ups and 18% into sit-ups.
